547 | General Notes |
John Adie was the son of William Adie from Port William in Scotland. It appears that William may have been a sailor. |
|
548 | 1863 | Williams arrival in New Zealand |
Johns father (William) jumped ship in Australia and made his way to the Calgoullie gold rush. From here he moved to New Zealand and came to Otago where he took part in the Dunstan rush. William Adie was married in Clyde and the couple moved to the Nevis goldfield where they made their home. |
549 | c1878 | John was born around 1878. |
John was born around 1878. It seems he followed his father and spent his working life as a gold miner in the Nevis. |
550 | Miss Clemintina Hasten McKerhan came from Dunedin. It is unclear when or how John Adie met Miss McKerhan. |
Miss Clemintina Hasten McKerhan came from Dunedin. It is unclear when or how John Adie met Miss McKerhan. |
|
551 | c1925 | Clemintina comes to live with the Parcell family in dwelling #224 |
Around 1925 Miss McKerhan (Clemintina) came to live with the Parcell family in dwelling #224, Smiths Gully, as a boarder. It seems that Henry Parcell may have known the Adie family. Clemintina may have stayed with the family until the couple were married or until their new house, dwelling #34 was built. |
552 | 1926 | Marriage of John and Clemintina |
The couple were married in Dunedin. John Adie was 48 years old and Clemintina McKerhan was 22 years of age. The couple made their home in dwelling #34. John Adie rode a large white horse called 'Maggie' (see photo #1316) |
553 | c1930 | John Adie purchased a Model A car. |
John Adie purchased a new Model 'A' Ford car, probably a Fordor. The salesman from Dunedin delivered the car and stayed with the family some time while he taught John how to drive the car. This was the first car in Bannockburn with glass windows rather than plastic type side curtains. |
554 | 1936 | The Adie family move to Christchurch |
Mr Adie wanted his children to have a good education, with all the benefits of a large centre, so the family moved to Christchurch. Dwelling #34 was sold to Mr Albert Manson. The contents of the house, along with John Adies white horse were put up for auction. The contents were sold, however with the coming of the motor car, no one was interested in 'Maggie' the white horse. Mrs Heather Millar (Adie) recalls with sadness that her father just let their faithful old horse loose in the diggings when they left Bannockburn. However, it appears that one of the locals (possibly one of the Scott boys) retrieved the horse and looked after it. |
