In January 1886, James Cooper took up a coal lease on the northern bank of the Kawarau River, about 2 miles (3.2km) upstream of Cromwell. The area had an upper layer of a coal seam exposed in the river bank. The seam was 6 foot thick and contained fair quality lignite. James Cooper opened up a mine (location #503) on this seam. It is not known how long this mine was worked. |
