Notes

The table below shows any historical notes about the location.

Note Date Short Description Note Text
2317 1893 Mine location. The mine was located on the Lower Bannockburn Creek, approx 1.6 km from the Kawarau River, approx 0.6 km upstream for the confluence with Shepherds Creek, on the true left bank. The area now forms part of the Bannockburn picnic area, north side. The area has now been planted with trees, however the decline slope is still evident running eastwards, ending in a large depression where the mine entrance has been blocked off. There is also an unidentified 'mine shaft' sink hole, approx 3m x 3m visible among the trees on the northern side, about 130m from the Carinmuir Road entrance to the picnic area. This may have been a pump air shaft for the mine, a structure which may have been the headworks appears in photos.
2318 1893 Opening of the mine. Mr Parcell opened up a mine on the Cairnmuir coal seam in the lower Bannockburn Creek area. This may have been close to, or part of the Parcell and Jones mine (location #188)
2320 1900 Formation of the Cromwell & Bannockburn Colliery Company In April of 1900, the Cromwell & Bannockburn Colliery Company was formed. They purchased the Cairnmuir Mine, however it appears that they did not work this mine on the Cairnmuir seam.
2321 c1909 The company tried to sell their coal leases, with no success. The company tried to sell their Cairnmuir coal leases but had no luck, so let them lapse.
2323 1909 Lease taken up by William Robertson & Party. (Cairnmuir Coal Company ) William Robertson & Party took up the lease on the Cairnmuir mine after the Cromwell & Bannockburn Colliery Company let the lease lapse. The mine was re-opened and the Cromwell Argus reported on 6 Sep that James Lewis had been appointed as Manager.
2324 1913 Change of mine manager. In November of 1913 the mine manager, Mr Lewis left the company and he was replaced by Mr Arthur Whittlestone who continued in this position until 1917.
2325 1917 Formation of the Bannockburn Coal Company. At this time, the owners of the three working coal mines in Bannockburn decided to amalgamate. They formed the Bannockburn Coal Company.
2326 1917 General note. The owners of the three working coal mines in Bannockburn decided to amalgamate and formed the Bannockburn Coal Company. The owners were : William Robertson & Party (locations #191 and #194) William James Hodson and George Crabbe (location #185) William Richard Parcell (2) Syndicate (location2 #248 and #249) As a result the only mine to remain open was the Kawarau mine #249 in Shepherds Creek. The Cairnmuir mine was closed down.
2327 1918 J L Gibson & Party take up a lease on the mine. It appears that James Gibson and party may have taken up a lease on the Cairnmuir mine. However, by this time the mine had been well worked and the water in the mine was still a problem. The remaining coal was inclined to be wet and fretted easily, causing it to collapse without warning. Coal was removed from the edges of the supporting pillars which caused parts of the mine to collapse.
2328 1919 Closure of the mine. It appears that James Gibson finally closed the Cairnmuir Mine around 1919, having won around 330 tons of coal.
