| 1902 | Mine location. | Shepherds Creek. In the western slope of the terrace between Pigroot and Adams Gullies. The outline of the portal is still visible however it is half buried and flooded. It is approx 20m north of location #249. The tiphead / loading bank is still visible. The main drive was a 65m decline at a grade of 1 in 4. A survey plan was produced by Mr G A Balikie (surveyor) of Gore in 1943. It appears from this plan that location #248 is connected to location #384 which may have been used as a ventilation drive. |
| 1902 | Mine managers. | Alexander Sinclair Gillanders 1902 - 1908 William Richard Parcell (2) 1908 - 1910 |
| 1902 | General notes. | Late in 1902, the coal company mine manager, Mr A S Gillanders, opened up a new mine in Shepherds Creek, just north of the mouth of Adams Gully. this mine was known as the Shepherds Creek No 1 mine. |
| 1910 | General note. | By August of 1910 the mine had been driven to a depth of 1000ft (305m) and was closed down as having been worked out. |
| 1914 | W R Parcell syndicate purchased the mine. | At this time the Cromwell and Bannockburn Colliery Company was wound up. The assets were purchased at auction for £500 by the William Richard Parcell syndicate of local miners. The assets included locations #248 and #249. The syndicate worked the Shepherds Creek No 2 mine (#249) now known as the Kawarau mine, however they did not work the No 1 mine (#248) |

| 1917 | Formation of the Bannockburn Coal Company. | The owners of the three remaining working coal mines in the area decided to amalgamate and form the Bannockburn Coal Company. As a result, the only mine to remain working was the Kawarau mine, which had previously been known as the Shepherds Creek No 2 mine (location #249) The company directors were : William Robertson & Party (previously owned locations #191 and #194) William James Smith Hodson and George Crabbe (previously owned location #185) William Richard Parcell & syndicate (previously owned location #248 and #249) |
| 1920 | Bannockburn Coal Company was wound up. | In April of 1920 the Bannockburn Coal Company was wound up and the assets were purchased by the J A Gordon syndicate. |

It seems that Mr Hodson worked the Shepherds Creek No 1 mine (#248) as well as the Kawarau mine (previously known as the Shepherds Creek No 2 mine - location #249) at various times. He may also have opened up the Shepherds Creek mine #243 at this time. John Hodson employed William McLennan Crabbe, Alexander (Sandy) Robertson and Theodore Henry Toms. The mines #248 and #249 were very wet and required extensive pumping. Mr Hodson replaced the old steam boiler with one from a traction engine and used 100mm diameter pump lines. The dampness required the use of gelignite rather than black powder which could get wet. |

It appears that the syndicate worked location #248 and replaced the steam engine with electric motors to drive the winch and pumps. Mine personnel were : Sid Hewison - mine manager, Charlie Scott - miner, Herbert (Bert) Laney - electrician. |
| 1952 | The mine was finally closed down. | It appears that the mine worked up until this time and was finally closed down. |
