3262 | 1894 | Location | On the old road to Stewart town from Bannockburn, at a point opposite dwelling #48, where the road took a slight turn to the south. This part of the old road has been sluiced away as part of Charles Ray's claim. |
3263 | 1894 | Coroners Report. | John Downie Menzies accidentally lost his life on the evening of 30 June 1894 by falling over the face of Charles Ray's claim in Pipeclay Gully. He was on his way home to Stewart town from Bannockburn. The night was very dark and Mr Menzies did not have a lantern with him, which he usually carried at night. He had been trying to find his way by lighting matches. However there were a number of deep water races in the area. So, without wearing his spectacles, the darkness, and the bend in the road, Mr Menzies stumbled over the 70 foot cliff to his death. |
