3313 c1871 Chair construction. It may have been a wire or hemp rope stretched across the Kawarau River supported on timber 'A' frames with anchors embedded into the rock on both sides of the river. An iron cage with a flat wooden deck suspended on pulleys running along the 'wire' may have been used to transport coal in sacks. The cage would be pulled across the river with a hemp rope attached to and below the support wire.
