| 3565 | 1894 | John Cooper opened up his mine. | In June 1894, John Cooper opened up a mine on the northern bank of the Kawarau River, the site being approx 700m below where the current Bannockburn bridge is located. There was an upper layer of a seam of lignite exposed on the river bank. He did not do too much work in this mine. |
