Note Date Short Description Note Text
3567 1886 General notes. In January 1886, James Cooper took up a coal lease on the northern bank of the Kawarau River, about 2 miles (3.2km) upstream of Cromwell. The area had an upper layer of a coal seam exposed in the river bank. The seam was 6 foot thick and contained fair quality lignite. James Cooper opened up a mine (location #503) on this seam. It is not known how long this mine was worked.
3568 1930 General notes. In 1930 W J S Hodson opened up a mine on the site of James Coopers mine (#503). No details of the working of this mine have been located by the author at this time. It appears that the mine was abandoned around 1940.
