716 | 1871 | Dwelling #54 purchased for use as a private school. | There were around 30 school age children in the Bannockburn area, however very few were attending the recently established school in Cromwell despite the fact that they were allowed free passage across the Kawarau River on the ferry punt. John Simpson was persuaded by local feeling to open a private school. He purchased dwelling #54 on 29 May 1871. By July the school had a roll of 25 children. School fees were one shilling and sixpence per child per week. |
