788 | 1871 | Building of the Carrick Range Hotel - originally in Quartzville. | In May 1871 John McMormick started building the first hotel and store in Quartzville near the Royal Standard Battery. It was completed in July 1871. A free ball and supper was held in the hotel in October - hosted by Mr & Mrs McCormick - to celebrate the formation of the new township of Quartzville. |

I was relocated and rebuilt on the corner of Nevis Street (west side) and Terrace Street (south side). Mr Peake applied to transfer the licence to this new hotel, but the licensing board rejected his application. Charles Peake was now in the position of having a hotel in quartzville, the Carrick Range Hotel - Peakseville with a liquor licence and no publican, while in Bannockburn he was now the publican os his new Carrick Range Hotel, without a liquor licence. He leased the Carrick Range - Peakseville complex to Mr George Manson. Meanwhile he ran his Bannockburn hotel as a boarding house and hall. Finally the licensing board granted a liquor licence for the Bannockburn hotel. |
