Mrs & Mrs Lawrence had dwelling #106 built for them by Mr George Cochrane Burghess before their wedding. They were married in the Methodist church (location #93) on 27 Jun 1923, by the Rev. Witherford. Mr Lawrence took over the Bannockburn to Nevis mail run some time before his wedding. He started with two horses, a cart and a gig which was used as a taxi. These were all purchased from his uncle, Mr Robert Toms, for forty pounds. The horse and gig was replaced by a Model T Ford car which was used as the mail car and taxi between Bannockburn and Cromwell. Mr Lawrence continued to run a team of horses and a cart. The horses were housed in the Stone Store Stables (location #102), the cart and gig in the store gig shed (dwelling #129) until 1928. |
1625 | 1928 | General Notes |
Mr Lawrence replaced his cart and team of horses with a Model T one ton truck, then came a Chevrolet one ton truck (Berty). Dwelling #124 was built from materials salvaged from dwelling #126 and 102. The one ton Chevy truck was joined by a two ton, and later a three ton Chevy truck. Ted Lawrence decided to concentrate on general cartage and gradually the taxi service was phased out. He employed a number of local men as drivers from time to time. Mr Earnie Parker was the first driver, and he lived for a time in part of dwelling #126. Mr Stan Vickers, then Mr Dan Cooper, also drove for Mr Lawrence. Mr Cedric Parsons was a part time taxi driver when Mr Lawrence was busy with general cartage duties. Some of the loads carried by Ted Lawrence's trucks included : 600 gallons of cream a week for a cheese factory in Dunedin. up to 15,000 cases of apricots per season. Large quantities of Briar berries for the manufacture of Robinsons Rose Hip syrup. 200 pigs to the meat works in Dunedin. 600 bales of wool per year.
