It appears that Adam Aitken arrived in New Zealand around 1871

Adam appears to have been living at Morven (Arrow Ferry, Gibbston Flat, where he may well have been gold mining

It appears that Adam (Aitken) moved from the Carrick Range area to Stewart Town, where he may have built dwelling #137

34 1882 Adam and Amelia's marriage

On June 30, Adam Aitken, miner, aged 36 years married Amelia Jane Angel, aged 21 years, a spinster. The ceremony was held in My Aitkens dwelling in Stewart Town (dwelling #137). The officiating minister was the Rev. J.L.Blackie. The witnesses were Messrs J.D.Menzies and D.U.McGregor, both miners of Stewart Town

Margaret Aitken was born on October 15 1883

36 1885 Birth of James

James Aitken was born on June 15 1885

37 1888 Margaret enrolled at Bannockburn school

Margeret was enrolled at the Bannockburn school on November 27 1888

38 1890 Adams brother ( Thomas ) comes to live with the Aitkens

Adams brother Thomas was listed in Stones Directory as a miner in Bannockburn. Around this time it appears that he came to live with the Aitkens in dwelling #137. It is not clear how long he stayed

39 1890 James enrolled at Bannockburn school

James was enrolled at the Bannockburn school on August 18 1890

40 1892 Birth of Harriet

Harriet Aitken was born on December 24 1892

41 1894 Margaret moves to Invercargill

In November, when Margaret was in standard 3, she was 11 years old. She appears to have moved to Invercargill, maybe to stay with her uncle and aunt James Falkirk Aitken and Amelia Esther Aitken. They lived at 93 Clyde Street, Invercargill with their one boy and two girls. Mararet may well have been sick and the move to Invercargill was to get help. She attended Invercargill South school, standard 4

42 1895 Charles Angel (Snr) and Charles Angel (Jnr) come to live with the Aitkens

On July 4th the Angels Arms hotel (dwelling #27) burnt down and some time after that Charles Angel (Snr) and Charles Angel (Jnr) came to live with the Aitkens in dwelling #137. Charles Angel (Jnr) was listed in Stones Directory as a miner

43 1896 Margaret returnd from Invercargill

In February of 1896 is appears that Margaret Aitken had returned from Invercargill and was re-enrolled at the Bannockburn school. However, she left school because of sickness on September 25th

44 1896 Adam as a singer

Adam Aitken was a good singer and he performed in concerts at Bannockburn and Cromwell

45 1896 Note about the water race

The water race from Long Gully was lower than the Aitkens property so they were unable to have a garden of any size

46 1897 Harriet enrolled at Bannockburn school

Harriet was enrolled at the Bannockburn school on July 18 1897

47 1897 Adam involved with others mining on Carrick Range

Adam Aitken was involved with D.A.Jolly, W.T.Talboys, J.Lawrence, J.Lawrence Jnr, C.Lawrence and A.Lawrence in water races and mining on the Carrick Range. (W.R certificates)

48 1898 Charles Angel (Snr) moves to Port Chalmers

Charles Angel (Snr) moved to Port Chalmers and purchased a business (unknown)

49 1900 James leaves school

James Aitken left school in standard 4, at the age of 15 years, and went to work, possibly with his father

50 1905 James working as a dredge hand

James Aitken was listed in Stones Directory as a dredge hand

51 1907 Harriet leaves school

On November 12, Harriet leaves school in standard 5

52 1909 Aitken family move to Invercargill

The Aitken family moved to Invercargill in 1909. It appears that the Lynn family took over dwelling #137 and the land around it. It is not clear if the Lynn family lived in the house or what they used it for.
