In January 1895, William Roy became involved in the formation of one of the most successful gold dredging ventures on the Kawarau River, the Electric Company. He received £200 (two hundred pound) of shares in the initial company capital of £2,400 when the company was formed as a private gold dredging company. Initially the company struggled to survive and Mr Roy lost faith in the enterprise. He sold his shares to Henry Young who was a tinsmith and plumber of Cromwell. In doing so, he would miss out on becoming very wealthy. However - instead he became a very loyal company employee. |
