The MacAndrew Bridge was in poor condition with weight and speed restrictions imposed on it. The bridge was overdue for replacement. In May, a deputation from the council met with the touring Minister of Works, Mr W S Goosman to discuss the funding for replacing the bridge. The outcome of these talks produced a £4 for £1 subsidy, and so planning for the new bridge was started. The bridge was designed by the Vincent County Council's Consulting Engineers, Duffill, Watts and King.

2101 1964 Construction of the bridge.

The successful tenderer was G M Damsteegt Ltd of Balclutha, with a price of £16,812. On 30 November , the bridge was opened by the Govenor-General, Sir Bernard Ferguson. A procession across the bridge was led by a piper, Alex Wilson. Later the senior citizens present were entertained in the Cromwell memorial Hall, while the children had a party meal in the Bannockburn Hall.
