2317 | 1893 | Mine location. |
The mine was located on the Lower Bannockburn Creek, approx 1.6 km from the Kawarau River, approx 0.6 km upstream for the confluence with Shepherds Creek, on the true left bank. The area now forms part of the Bannockburn picnic area, north side. The area has now been planted with trees, however the decline slope is still evident running eastwards, ending in a large depression where the mine entrance has been blocked off. There is also an unidentified 'mine shaft' sink hole, approx 3m x 3m visible among the trees on the northern side, about 130m from the Carinmuir Road entrance to the picnic area. This may have been a pump air shaft for the mine, a structure which may have been the headworks appears in photos. |
2318 | 1893 | Opening of the mine. |
Mr Parcell opened up a mine on the Cairnmuir coal seam in the lower Bannockburn Creek area. This may have been close to, or part of the Parcell and Jones mine (location #188) |
2319 | 1900 | The mine is sold to the Cromwell & Bannockburn Colliery Company. |
In April of 1900 the Cromwell & Bannockburn Colliery Company is formed, and they purchased the Cairnmuir mine. |
