2356 | 1935 | Marriage of William & Eileen. |
The couple were married in 1935. They worked trapping and poisoning rabbits on horesback in the Cairnmuir area, selling the skins. When the rabbit canning factory opened in Cromwell they sold whole trapped rabbits. |
2357 | 1939 | The couple moved into dwelling #195. |
When they earned enough money to build their new house (dwelling #195) they moved from dwelling #61 into #195. |
2358 | 1946 | Dwelling #195 accidentally burnt down. |
Dwelling #195 was accidentally burnt down. The family may have moved back into dwelling #61 at this time. |
2359 | c2000 | Discovery of gold !! |
The site of dwelling #195 is now part of the Cairnmuir camping ground. A camper scratching in the ground came across some small gold nuggets in a group. It appears that the gold had been in a small bottle belonging to William Olds who was a keen prospector. The gold had been lost when dwelling #195 was burnt down in 1946. Mrs Eileen Olds recalled the story when the camp owners M& Mrs Paterson told her of the find. |
