The first independent Bannockburn Rifle Club was formed by members of the Bannockburn contingent of the Cromwell Rifle Volunteer Group. These included : James Crabbe, Henry Parcell, Adam Aitken, John Pryde, Peter Mahan, Joseph Moore, James Horn. in October, the rifle club was supplied with obsolete army rifles which were Martini - Henry action rifles fitted with 0.303 in calibre barrels. The new club did not parade and drill like the volunteers but conducted class firing. This involved rewarding good scores with a small amount of free ammunition. A new rifle range was constructed on the terrace between Jones Gully and Tinleys Gully. Ranges from 200 to 600 yards (approx 200-600m) were set up, firing to targets west of the butts. |
