The new club did not parade and drill like the volunteers but conducted class firing. This involved rewarding good scores with a small amount of free ammunition. A new rifle range was constructed on the terrace between Jones Gully and Tinleys Gully. Ranges from 200 to 600 yards (approx 200-600m) were set up, firing to targets west of the butts.
