2501 c1866 As the story goes ...

John Halliday (1) had a store and hotel in Shepherds Creek (location #222). It was at a bend in the Bannockburn-Nevis Road between Poverty Terrace and Smith's Gully - at the junction with Shepherds Creek. His neighbours included a number of small 'sly grog shanties'. One of these was kept by a woman who, according to tradition, was "Port Wine Mary" Mrs Smith, who advertised by throwing empty bottles on the road. She would use the same bottles over and over again just to upset her neighbour Halliday by making him believe that she was doing more business than he was.
