Originally the water race traversed the western slopes of Birnies and Jones Gullies then onto Jones / Parcell Gully ridge. This route was very prone to skips and the water race frequently blew out. |

It may have been about this time that the water race was moved to the eastern side of Birnie's Gully and a 7" diameter (180 mm) pipeline was constructed in the present location using old riveted steel mining pipes. |

The old steel pipeline was now very rusty and frequently sprung leaks. It was replaced with new 9" diameter (230mm) concrete pipes purchased from Humes industries in Alexandra at a cost of £700. ( Note - at this point decimal currency was in use and it may have been $700 ) |
