On 15 Feb the Cromwell Argus states that Mr Behrens had purchased the wheel wright and coach building business of Mr La Fontaine situated opposite the Bank of New South Wales in Melmore Terrace, Cromwell. |

It appears that about this time Mr Behrens had moved to Cromwell. He lived with a long time friend and fellow bachelor, the Cromwell tinsmith, Henry (Harry) Young who was slightly eccentric. Harry invested the little money he made in mining ventures which had all failed over time. This had made him permanently distressed to the point that when the shares in the Electric Gold Dredging Company made him a wealthy man he completely failed to recognise the fact and just left the money in the bank to accumulate. Max behrens and Harry young had made mutual wills. Unlike Harry, Max had never made very much money in his mining of business ventures. Max was a Schleswig German but at various times had made out that he was a Dane when it was not socially acceptable to be a German. However, he was quite outspoken at times about England. He would say "I hopes I lives to see the day when Germany has a schmak at England" |

On 1 Oct 1913, Henry Young died at the age of 88 years and was buried in the Cromwell cemetery. In accordance with his wishes, Max Behrens became toe sole beneficiary of his considerable wealth. |

After inheriting a considerable sum of money from Henry Young, Henrich decided to take a trip back to visit his homeland of Germany. His plan was to have his fortune follow him at a later date. |

On 5 Aug 1914, Britain declared war on Germany. Henrich Behrens fortune in his New Zealand bank account was 'frozen' as enemy property. It is not known what happened to Henrich, however it appears that England may have done the 'schmacking' after all. |
