2771 1895 Birth of William James Smith Hodson.

William James Smith Hodson was born at Shag Point in 1895.

2772 1895 James Hodson and family moved to Purakanui.

It appears that John Hodson and his family moved to Purakanui, near Warrington, north of Port Chalmers, where they owned or worked on a dairy farm. From Purakanui it appears that they moved to Fairfield, near Dunedin, where John worked in a coal mine.

2773 1901 John appointed as a mine manager in Gibbston.

Mr john Hodson was appointed as manager for the Gibbston Coal Pits company at Gibbston Saddle Coal Pit. Mr Hodsons family may have lived in Gibbston but no record of this has been found. John Hodson was remembered in Gibbston as a strong and powerful man.

2774 1906 John Hodson moved to Bannockburn and dwelling #244.

In June of 1906, it appears that Mr John Hodson and his family may have moved from Gibbston to Bannockburn, possibly to dwelling #244.

On 18 June, Jane Hodson was enrolled at the Bannockburn school. It is not clear which coal mine John Hodson worked for at this time. Dwelling #244 is situated close to a number of mines. Mr Hodson may have applied for a mine managers position with the Cromwell and Bannockburn Colliery Company, the largest coal company in the area.

2776 1908 Stones directory listing

John Hodson was listed as a mine manager in Stones directory. This was his first listing.

2777 1909 John Hodson involved with the local rifle club.

It appears that John Hodson was involved in the Bannockburn Rifle Club. He was presented with a gold medallion by the "Ladies of Bannockburn"

2778 1909 John Hodson opened up the 'Lady Ranfurly' coal mine.

John Hodson opened up the 'Lady Ranfurly' coal mine (location #185) which it appears was connected underground to the original 'Excelsior' coal mine (location #179). It may well have been that John Hodson moved from dwelling #244 to dwelling #182 to work the coal mine during the week. He may have still rented dwelling #244.

About this time, William James Smoith Hodson left dwelling #244, and Bannockburn. He went to Herbert in North Otago with Edward Lawrence.

William James Smith Hodson server in W.W.1, and when he returned to Bannockburn he purchased dwelling #241 from Robert Toms.
