470 | 1890 | John Perrow applied for a residence area |
On April 1, John Perrow applied for a resident area on Bald Hill Flat. This may have been for dwelling #29. From the Short sisters memories (see #28), dwelling #29 appears to have been a boarding house, previously owned by the Cater family. |
471 | Notes on the Cater family boarding house (which may have become dwelling #29) |
A family photo (photo #888) noted that the family was from Quartzville. It may have been that Mr C Cater was a publican or ran a boarding house at Quartzville. In 1889 on June 7, the Cromwell Argus stated that C Cater was a publican of the Albert Hotel (maybe Albert Town). Mentioned in J P Parcells notes on 'house by house' residents. This note seems to be associated with #29 which seems to have been a boarding house in Shorts paddock, east of Shorts house. The note reads (page 9 - Bald Hill) : "(The Cater family Halliday) Maud Perrow, James Perrow, Fowler, Old boarding house. The Short sisters mentioned the boarding house to me, however they did not personally remember it. They told me that the boarding house had been moved down from Quartzville when the town came to an end. This may have been around c1890." The Cater family may have moved this building to site #29. The Cater family is not listed in other J P Parcell lists of residents in Terrace (Hall) Road. It may be that John Perrow purchased the building from the Cater family and moved it to Terrace Road himself. The Halliday connection appears to refer to the fact that Mrs Cater was a daughter of John Halliday (This was noted on the back of the photo). It is not clear whether or not the Perrow family ran dwelling #29 as a boarding house. |
