479 | There is some confusion over George's name. |
The Bannockburn school records show the children's fathers name as William. This is definitely the correct family as it shows all the children leaving school on 21 Sep 1888 for school at Luggate (Queensbury). |
|
480 | There were also three additional children |
There were also three additional children but these were born after the family moved away to Queensbury. |
|
481 | Marriage of George and Harriet Elliott |
Mr and Mrs Elliott were married in England and came out to New Zealand to Bannockburn. It appears that Mr Elliott may have had an uncle who lived in Bannockburn. |
|
482 | 1878 | Arrival in Bannockburn |
On June 23 George and Harriet arrived in Bannockburn. On June 27, their first son William was born. Shortly after they arrived the big flood of 1878 took place. Mrs Elliott recalled going to the Kawarau River with a neighbour to watch the flood. She recalled seeing tables and chairs, and even a babies cradle among the debris in the muddy torrent. |
483 | 1878 | Mr George Elliott built dwelling #30 |
It appears that Mr George Elliott built dwelling #30. He was also a good gardener. He worked as a labourer and a miner. |
484 | 1888 | Funeral procession for Margaret Angel |
On 11 April 1888, Emily remembered being dressed in her best clothes, and with her brother and parents, standing by the road to watch the funeral procession of Mrs Margaret Angel from the Angel Arms Hotel which was just over the road. (#27). The hearse was drawn by four black horses with black plumes affixed to their heads. |
485 | 1888 | George becomes a roadman and moves to Queensbury |
With gold running out and many companies folding, George got a job with the County as a roadman / surfaceman. He was responsible for the section of road between Lowburn and Albert Town. His pay was 8 shillings a day and he worked 6 days a week. He moved to Queensbury and lived in a tent until he had built the first two rooms of his new house. The house had sod walls, with a corrugated iron roof and a tongue and groove ceiling. Around the end of August 1888 the family moved to Queensbury and lived in the two room house until more rooms were added later. The children's last day at Bannockburn school was 21 Aug 1888. |
486 | 1913 | Death of Harriet Elliott |
It appears that the family may have moved to Mount Barker, as Mrs Harriet Elliott died there on October 31, at the age of 63 years. She is buried in the Cromwell cemetery. |
487 | 1922 | Death of George (William) Elliott |
On 22 August, George Elliott was buried with his wife in the Cromwell cemetery. |
488 | Editors Notes : |
1. The George Elliott family came to Bannockburn from England because an Uncle of George's was living there. (unknown person) From the Cromwell cemetery records : a Mr William Elliot, native of Tofthalm Liddesdale, Scotland died at Nevis on 12 March 1891, aged 63 years. Also Helen Millar beloved wife of William Elliot died at the Nevis, 16th March 1920, aged 81 years. Could this William Elliot be George's uncle (headstone spelling may be wrong) He may have been living in Bannockburn in 1878 when George arrived, and later moved to Nevis for work. 2. It seems strange that if Mrs Elliott died at Mt Barker, so close to Wanaka that she was not buried in Wanaka. However they reason for this may be the other Elliotts buried in the Cromwell cemetery. 1896, on November 6 William Elliott, aged 16 years was buried in the Cromwell cemetery. Mrs Elliott had a son William (born 27 Jun 1878) - this may be her son, and a reason for her being buried in Cromwell. 1918 - on May 22, Thomas Elliott was buried in the Cromwell cemetery. Was this another of Mrs Elliott's sons ? |
