3129 1862 Punt location.

This punt was located on the Clutha river, approx 800m downstream from the junction of the Clutha and Kawarau rivers at Cromwell.

3130 1862 General note (from memory of G M Hassing)

On 13 Sept the provisional government sanctioned the establishment of a punt on the Clutha river, approx 800m downstream of the junction between the Kawarau and Clutha rivers, at Cromwell. This punt was to ferry people from the left bank of the Cromwell Gorge to Cornish Point. Henry Hill also operated another ferry service from Cornish Point to Cromwell (location #321). The punt, like others of the time, could not handle the swift current when the river rose. The price paid to cross via the punt was sixpence per miner.
