John Halliday and Augusta Jelly were married on 22 Nov 1862 in Dunedin.

3133 1862 John Halliday had been at Muttontown.

John Halliday had been at Muttontown Gully, near Clyde. It is not known if as a miner or as a storekeeper.

3134 1863 General notes.

About this time Mr Halliday moved to Fox's, now Arrowtown, It is not known what occupation he worked in while there. Later he worked at Criffel on Mr Pisa, possibly as a station hand, and he then moved to Kawarau Station.

3135 1865 John Halliday started his store in Shepherds Creek.

About this time John Halliday started his store in Shepherds Creek (dwelling #326). It may have been that the store was actually part of the Shepherds Creek Hotel (location #222). Notes from the original unpublished Heart of the Desert indicate the location of John Halliday's shanty store building,bakery and post office was at the bend of the road between Poverty Terrace and Smith's Gully (at the junction of Shepherds Creek).

3136 1865 Birth of Miss Ella Halliday

On 20 Sep, Miss Ella Halliday was born. She was the first child to be born in Bannockburn. Her birth was registered by Warden Stratford in Clyde.

3137 1866 Electoral roll records.

It appears from the electoral roll records that John Halliday's dwelling #326 was a "timber and iron store".

3138 1868 A Post Office was added to the store.

About this time it appears a post office was added to the store. (Parcell's notes)

3139 1870 The Shepherds Creek Hotel and store was moved.

In December the Shepherds Creek Hotel, the store and the post office were shifted a short distance. (from Heart of the Desert - original)

Sarah Alice Haliday married Cecil(?) Cater. Ella Halliday married George Saxon. John Halliday did not marry. Jane Halliday married Alexander Paterson Stiven, who was a carter (Bannockburn to Lawrence).
