in April 1869 James Nicholas discovered and opened up a seam of lignite opposite Richards Ferry on the Bannockburn side of the Kawarau River. He gave the mine the name of the Gladstone Coal Works.

3267 1879 Electoral roll records

The electoral roll for the period of the last day of August 1870 to the first day of Sept 1871 for Dunstan mentions Mr J Nicholas. It states that his place of abode is near Cromwell at Bannockburn Ferry, Kawarau River, Gladstone Coal Works. There are no details of dwelling #370 or who lived in it after James Nicholas.
