3312 c1871 Location of the chair.

On the Kawarau River, approx 150m upstream from the existing Bannockburn bridge. Close to the position of location #354 - the Newcastle Pit.

3313 c1871 Chair construction.

It may have been a wire or hemp rope stretched across the Kawarau River supported on timber 'A' frames with anchors embedded into the rock on both sides of the river. An iron cage with a flat wooden deck suspended on pulleys running along the 'wire' may have been used to transport coal in sacks. The cage would be pulled across the river with a hemp rope attached to and below the support wire.

3314 c1871 Chair constructed to move coal across the river.

It appears that about this time, Scott and Logan (Newcastle Pit) constructed a chair across the Kawarau River from their mine site on the Bannockburn right bank. The chair enabled them to get their coal onto the Cromwell Flats, and so to Cromwell for sale.
