3518 c1880 Mine location.

The exact location of the mine is unknown, however it may have been on the north side of the Gully Road / Bannockburn-Nevis Road intersection. There is no sign of the portal to this underground mine, however coal dross can be seen on the ground in this area.

3519 c1880 The mine is established.

It appears that Thomas Toms (1) may have opened up the coal pit about this time. Mr Toms has worked in the coal mines in the Alexandra area before coming to Bannockburn.

3520 1886 General notes.

The pocket ledger of Mr & Mrs Thomas Toms (1) records the coal account. The balance from last month (April) was 4 tons and 5 bags. The next entry gives the number of bags of coal mined on each day of the month. (see photo)

3521 1888 General notes.

The last entry in the pocket ledger for the coal account was for the month of February 1888. It appears that Mr Toms was mining about 0.3 to 0.5 ton per day and packing it out in bags holding between 25-30 lb (11.25-13.5 kg). It seems he was selling his coal to John Pryde (location #73) who was a coal miner and coal merchant. Between 1886 and 1888 Thomas Toms (1) had worked at other jobs such as quartz mining and farm work in between working his coal mine.

3522 1888 Mr Toms gave up the coal mine.

About this time the coal industry we not very profitable and it may be that Mr Toms gave up his coal mine at this time.
