At the age of 20 years, Ellis moved to the Nevis where he took up a contract graveling the roads. For a time he worked as a cook for Mr Elliot at the Nevis Crossing Hotel and Store. |

The Hotel (Nevis Crossing?) burnt down and Mr Williams ran the store for 18 months. He then brought Masters house and ran it as a hostel. Johny Williams worked as a wagoner with a 5 horse team and he would cart 6 months of supplies from Garston before bad weather and show would close the road. Freight was carted at £3 per ton. He also carted coal for the gold dredges. |

Ellis Williams purchased the Nevis Hotel and Store/Post Office. he was publican, storekeeper, butcher, baker and sometimes even undertaker. He would drive sheep from Garston, walking with them and grow winter feed for them. As a baker, he would turn out 130 4lb (1.8kg) loaves of bread a week. At the hotel he generated his own power for lighting using a Pelton wheel powered generator. He would grow oats for his horses and cut his own chaff using water power. Ellis lived in the Nevis for 50 years, and spent 44 winters there. |

Ellis sold the Nevis Hotel to Mr Ted Newman. Ellis and his wife then retired to Bannockburn, and to dwelling #91. On retiring as the Postmaster at the Nevis after 26 years, the Director general of the post Office presented Mr Williams with a eulogistic testimonial together with £10 - "for my warm appreciation of long and faithful service given by you for which a non-permanent officer, is outstanding" (The Nevis Hotel was closed and the building was demolished) |
