George Lawrence was born on 5 Mar 1867 at Quartzville. His parents were James Lawrence (1) and his wife Francis Marsh Rodgers.

1432 1877 Birth of Mary Anne Toms

Mary Anne Toms was born on 24 Sep 1877 in Bannockburn, to Thomas Toms, a miner, and his wife Laticia Mary Anne Stewart.

1433 General Note

George worked with his father in various coal and gold mining ventures in the area.

1434 1889 George Lawrence and his brother take up the Day Dawn Reef.

In June of 1889, George Lawrence and his brother Edward (who had originally discovered the Day Dawn reef) took up the Day Dawn reef. The reef is situated between the 'Crown and Cross' and the old 'Caledonian'. They re-erected part of the old Caladonian battery in the floor of he upper reaches of Smith's Gully.

In October 1889 the Day Dawn battery was christened by Miss Harriet Lawrence with a bottle of champagne. The four stamp battery was driven by a Pelton wheel.

George Grey Lawrence was married to Mary Anne Toms in the Cromwell Anglican church.

It appears that about this time George Lawrence had dwelling #98 built for his new bride.

In 1903, George Lawrence, M B Edwards, R H Blair and William Atkins took up0 the Day Dawn once more, from the Caledonian down to the 'Crown and Cross'. This new venture was named the Hercules Company. Unfortunately the results were not very encouraging. George Lawrence continued to be involved in mining ventures on the Carrick Range for some years.
